Ciao a tutti,
I am an American currently
living in Vicenza. I am trying to learn Italian and was
wondering if there were any Italian speakers who would
like to help me while also improving their English. Also,
does anyone have ideas on private language tutors or
other suggestions for learning the language. Grazie,
John |

Tips on Learning Italian |

Ciao John,
I am an Italian/American (have
dual citizenship). Our family resided in the beautiful
surrounding area of la bella citta Vicenza for more than
a decade. You are very fortunate to have this time of
sojourn there.
My advice on learning the
language - the best way is to make some Italian friends.
Obviously, if you have little or no background in the
language you will have to make friends with Italians who
have some knowledge of English initially. Your
neighborhood is a good place to start. Each "quartiere"
(as neighborhoods are referred to in Vicenza) has annual
activities, esp. festas in conjunction with religious
holidays and the stagione (seasons). Get involved in
these.
Attending a parrocchia (or Italian
church parish) weekly is a good opportunity to experience
the language - hearing is very important in terms of
learning. And the Italian mass is a beautiful experience
as well. Immersing yourself in situations where the
opportunity to hear and use the English language is
non-existent is really the best venue for learning in
general.
We had friends from the American
military community in Vicenza, and were always sad to see
many who would be stationed in Italy for 2-4 years and
never learn the language or take the time to learn about
the rich culture - and there's so much in Vicenza!
If you have young children, enroll them in your local
Asilo (preschool program) - they'll learn and the parents
will to!
We found the Vicentini to be
wonderful people when you get to know them. You must
understand, however, that Northern Italy is quite a bit
different from the South. In particular, the Northern
Italians are much more reserved. So, it will take some
time to make friends - but keep at it! If you make the
effort consistently over time it will definitely pay off.
And you (and your family perhaps) will return to the
U.S. enlightened and blessed beyond belief! Buona
fortuna e coraggio!
Mary

Ciao John,
I read your email looking for someone
to exchange English for Italian and Italian for English.
I am a native Italian speaker living in Vicenza and speak
English, but am seeking to improve it.
Please let me
know if you are interested in discussing the possibility
of meeting to exchange language lessons and conversation.
Take care,
Carmen

Ciao Mary,
Thanks for the excellent
suggestions. I agree with you that the area here
surrounding Vicenza is beautiful and all of the Italian
people we've had contact with have been great. I know
what you are saying about the people who live overseas
for a while and never make any attempt to learn about the
people, the area, the culture, etc. I lived in Germany
for a few years and saw the same thing. To live in
another country is an incredible opportunity and
hopefully I'll be able to make some progress learning
Italian. Thanks again for your help,
John |

Ciao Carmen,
Thanks for your offer. I would
be interested in getting together sometime to practice
Italian/English. You write English very well, so I think
your English is a lot better than my Italian! Anyhow, let
me know what you would like to do and I look forward to
hearing from you.

Ciao John,
Thanks for your reply and for the
compliment too, but I don't feel that my English is as
good as you believe.
Anyway, I thought that
you could perhaps give me your telephone number, or
your email address, and I could then contact you to
arrange meeting for the lesson.
Please let me whether
it is ok for you.
I look forward to hearing from you.
