The town
of Vicenza has remote origins, that go back to the prehistoric
age. In the medioeval area Vicenza was under the domination
of the Scaligery dynasty, but from 1404 to 1797 the long
Venetian domination guaranteed four centuries of peace and well-being.
The art reached very high levels and the economy grew. The 16th century was the time
of the great architect Andrea Palladio, who left
Vicenza and the whole world a priceless artistic heritage. In the 19th century, after
the fall of Napoleone, the town passed to the Austrians and later belonged to the
Lombard Venetian Kingdom.
In 1866 it was united to the Kingdom of Italy. The first World War was mostly fought in the province
of Vicenzas, while the Second World War also affected the town, that was seriously damaged by bombs. |
